BREAKING NEWS: N2 Area Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest, September 24, 2011

When N2 Area Governor Beenal Baba invited me to be a judge at N2 Area Contests to held in Intel PG9, Penang Island on September 24 Saturday afternoon, I could not resist for two reasons - I was the first N2 Area Governor in 1993-94 and I used to work at Intel Penang. No regrets.

As I was late on arrival as judge at Penang Seagate Club Contests the last time, I wanted to be early this time. Judges' briefing was scheduled at 12:30pm. I was at Intel PG9 car park at 12:20pm. Improvement made.

N2 Area has 5 assigned clubs for 2011-2012. There were 4 contestants for both Humorous Speech Contest and Evaluation - one each from Bayan Baru, Intel Penang, Intel MSSC and Penang Altera. PDC did not send any contestant. May be next year?

As Division N has 4 areas, the top two winners of each contest will proceed to the Division level. Drum roll.

Kudos to N2 Area Governor Beenal Baba, Chief Judge DPRO Yoon Peng Yew and the Organizing Chair, Contest Chairs and organizing team who had helped to have successfully organized both area speech contests well.

Well done to all the contestants!

Congratulations to N2 Area Humorous Speech Contest 2011:
- Champion Jerry Low of Penang Altera
- 2nd place Tang Shin Chze of Intel Penang.

Congratulations to N2 Evaluation Contest 2011:
- Champion Jerry Low of Penang Altera
- 2nd place Terence Lee of Bayan Baru.

Members of Bayan Baru present were President Eileyn Chua, VPE Jack Ch'ng, VPPR Lim Kah Ying, contestants Koay Kah Hin and Terence Lee, Chew Yew Seng, Au Wai Ying and myself.

Area Governor Visit - What's Up?

Tonight, our N2 Area Governor Khor Siang Kheng (Intel Penang Toastmasters) visited our Bayan Toastmasters Club meeting. His main purpose was to promote and sell tickets for this October 25 Division N Humorous Speech and Evaluation Speech Contest at Intel Penang.

This term Area N2 consists of 4 clubs only - Bayan Baru Toastmasters, Intel Penang, Intel Speak Up and MAS Tanjong. PDC Toastmasters has been moved out to another Area.

Summary of AG w.r.t. Bayan Baru Toastmasters: "BBTMC is a role model club."

What is the purpose of an Area Governor's visit?

It is a requirement for an AG to visit a club every six months and file a report to Toastmasters International through the District Governor. It includes whether the Club is holding regular club meetings, have a minimum membership of charter strength of at least 20 members and working towards achieving the Distinguished Club Program as well as identifying club members who will be interested in being future District Officers.

In 2007-08, in the N2 Area Council, Siang Kheng was unanimously elected as the 2008-09 N2 Area Governor. In 2006-07, he lost the election to Past N2 Area Governor Koay Kah Hin (Bayan Baru Toastmasters). So if you are keen to be a District Officer, do not worry, you can run again and again and eventually, you will get the opportunity to play this role.

Bottomline, an AG is to help a Club, and only when help is needed, to achieve the Club mission for her members. It is also an excellent opportunity for an AG to learn better communication and leadership skills. Of being a positive motivator and able to discern and appreciate the different club cultures and different ways of doing things by each Club while sharing best practices.

Besides being the Induction Officer to install this term's Club Officers, AG is involved in Club Officer Training and organizing Area level Contests. Strives to achieve President's Distinguished Area Award.

What do this year AG Khor Siang Kheng, in addition to above, hope to achieve further as if above list is not enough for a full time unpaid job.

As I have known Siang Kheng for umpteen years, I will be sending him some easy and hard questions and will post his reply here.

1) What are your goals for Area N2 this term?
2) Where are the areas we need to improve?
3) There are only 4 clubs now in N2 Area, any plans to charter new clubs. If so, where and when?
4) What are your personal goals as Area Governor? Achieve your DTM?
5) How would you like to be remembered after you have completed your term.

If you have any questions you would like to ask the N2 AG, please post them here...

October 25 Update:
Met N2 AG Khor Siang Kheng at the Division N Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest at Intel PG-9 today. Did a quick face-to-face interview. Here is the summary:

Siang Kheng is married with 2 sons and the "Building Owner PG-8" in Intel Penang.

His goal is to achieve President's Disinguished Area. He hopes that Bayan Baru and Intel Penang will achieve President's Distinguished Club again and for Intel Speak Up and Mas Tanjong to achieve Distinguished Club or better.

Personally, he is going to complete his DTM - serving as Area Governor is one of the requirements.

Siang Kheng plans to conduct a Youth Leadership Program and charter a new corporate club by March or earlier.

Brief History of N2 Area

In the beginning....

In 1993, I proposed to Division N Governor Ricky Ch'ng (National Semiconductor Toastmasters) to have two Areas instead of 1 Area for Toastmasters Clubs in Penang.

I was then the IPP of National Semiconductor Toastmasters and volunteered to be the new and first N2 Area Governor.

TT Khoo (YMCA Penang) became N1 Area Governor and Sukdhev Singh (Taiping) became N3 Area for Clubs in Kedah and Perak for the term 1993-94 in the first year of District 51.

At the first District 51 Semi-Annual Convention in Bangkok in 1993, Dunstan Chan (Kuching) and I were the only two Area Governors outside Thailand in attendance. Show how much of enthusiam and the subsidy of our trip was Sin Dollars 100 only.

How to divide up the Clubs in Penang into two areas?

An initial proposal was to group all community clubs into one Area and all inhouse clubs in another Area. Eventually, it was decided best to use geographical division.

N2 would cover the clubs meeting in Bayan Lepas FTZ area while N1 covers the Clubs meeting in Georgetown which included Penang Toastmasters, Butterworth Toastmasters and YMCA Penang Toastmasters.

MIM Penang which meets near Padang Brown was caught in the middle but considered "south enough" to be part of N2 Area.

In the first year of Area N2, there were "7 clubs". Three were firmly established Clubs - National Semiconductor Penang (655), PDC (7371) and MIM Penang (6728).

Intel Penang(9699) was trying to get chartered officially. Two other Clubs, Applied Magnetics Toastmasters and B. Braun Toastmasters have started to have meetings but decided to close down. Hewlett Packard Toastmasters which met during lunch hour did not get chartered and discontinued.

So by the end of the year, there were left only 4 but very active clubs, fondly known as NS, PDC, Intel & MIM. We bought each installation tickets from each other and once, in 1994, even had a joint Area N2 Club installation dinner.

There were clubs added and removed from Area N2 but NS, PDC, Intel & MIM stood together closely over the years. In 1996, Bayan Baru which was sponsored by PDC also became a N2 Area "permanent fixture" club.

Clubs that were once part of N2 Area primarily because these clubs were chartered by N2 Clubs are Texchem, Bukit Mertajam Country Club, Dell APCC, Komag, Penang Seagate, Bayan Baru Mandarin, Vistana.

NS was later renamed Hong Leong and MIM was renamed Camaraderie. Eventually both clubs closed down.

Today, Area N2 covers Bayan Baru, Intel Penang, Intel Speak Up and MAS Tanjong.

One of the traditions in N2 Area is that Clubs prefer to hold their own club installations and that N2 Area Governor is given the role of Installation Officer to give more opportunity for everyone to do and learn more.

Another is to have regular Area Council Meeting and for clubs to hold election of the next N2 Area Governor during an Area Council meeting before the Annual District Convention.

Honor List of N2 Area Governors:
2009 Parthiban (Intel Penang, Penang)
2008 Khor Siang Kheng (Intel Penang, Penang)

2006 President's Distinguished Area
2005 President's Distinguished Area

2001 President's Distinguished Area
2000 - not distinguished -
1999 - not distinguished -
1998 Distinguished Area
1997 Select Distinguished Area
1996 Distinguished Area

Note: In 2001, there was a net growth of 1 club with the chartering of Penang Seagate by efforts of N2 Area Governor and members of N2 Clubs.

In later years, however, net growth was due to new clubs charted by other Areas but added to N2 Area at the end of the term in June and then moved to another Area the next term in July 1 to achieved PDA. This is not a good ethical practice.

I hope Area N2 will again start to charter our own clubs for the PDA and our own growth and as a center of excellence for Toastmasters International. Just my 2 cents.
