Forecasts - Year of the Ox

I just received above postcard of a famous Chinese painting of "Five Oxen" from Wuhan, China. What will the Year of the Ox brings to your Club?

1. The Ox is the second animal of the Chinese zodiac animals of Earth and Yin origin. The Ox will work hard and persevere and so all Club Officers and District Officers if they work hard without complaints like the Ox in 2009 will achieve all the DCP and District goals without any problems.

2. The Ox is strong and a born leader - honest and sincere but stubborn. So it is important that the Club President continues to lead with conviction and yet it is important to be flexible and tolerant to club members in meeting their different personal individual goals.

3. Clubs can expect to lose as many old members as new members join. It is important in 2009 to focus on ensuring that all members, new and old, are able to do their speeches, play different roles, conduct workshops to keep harmony, peace and avoid conflicts. Conflict resolutions and win-win situations are areas to watch out for especially in the middle of the year.

4. Quality of speeches and evaluations and meeting standards are under threat with changing attitude and lack of discipline. External factors affecting the club meeting atmosphere can be brought under control with patience and strong cooperation.

5. Financial scandals may happen and it is important that auditors and treasurers keep a close eye on careful spending and scrutinize all claims.

6. Overall, there is much optimism and hope that 2009 will be a year of recovery from the unexpected events of the preceeding year of the rat. Staying calm and confident, more open communication and leadership by example will result in a strong results in 2009 end.

Bayan Baru Dec 18 Club Meeting - Let the Shoes Do The Talk

The Toastmaster of the Meeting was Goh Hock Hai. Vice President Eudcuation Jessica Teo stood in for the President.

Winnie Foo was Table Topics master and several guests participated -making us think on our feet.

Break time was great as members and guests got closer and got to know each other better.

The four shining stars were project speakers - Ice Breaker Sherylnn Teh, P3 Ooi Beng Sun, P5 Chan Kuan Wai and Advanced Project Jessica Teo.

It was a meeting of shoes - formal shoes and informal shoes. Excited shoes, relaxing shoes, stressesd shoes and enjoying shoes. But there was no throwing of shoes.

The shoes walked the talk and talked the walk. Our last Club meeting for 2008 - see you all at the next Club meeting at Sunflower Training center as PSDC is closed on Jan 1, 2009.

Toastmasters Pins

When our Nov 6 Thursday night's meeting was over, our Bayan Baru Toastmasters Club President John Yeoh gave out to Club members the above nice pin of "District 51 The Courage To Conquer".

Apparently it was because our Club submitted the October semi-annual dues early. A big thank you to District 51 Governor 2008-09 Joseph Gomez.

This reminded me of my own small collection of Toastmasters pins.

I always enjoy looking at the many pins that some Toastmasters proudly wear and display especially during special Toastmasters events.

Yet personally, I do not like to wear them myself. Pins are unfriendly to fingers and elsewhere. Pins prick, exact pain and draw blood. Pins also cause permanent textile damages by boring holes into coat lapels, nice shirt collars or expensive ties.

Overall, pins are nice, Great to look at and tells a story. So I just collect them but keep them at home. Now I get to show them off to you.




This is less often seen pin of a gavel. Perhaps contest judges can wear them incognito.




A Merlion souvenir pin given by Toastmasters from Singapore. Exchanging or giving our pins during Toastmaters Convention is cool.




A Kangaroo Souvenir pin from Toastmasters from Australia.




14K Gold Pin. Nice but are so small to read.

So hard to tell the difference between a Toastmaster Pin or Club Officer Pin to the untrained eye. There is subtle differences in szie.

This is an "ATM" pin for Able Toastmaster Pin. Since these awards are no longer given out, this becomes a rare collector item. Interested to buy one, see me as I have a few left. LOL.




This prized coveted "DTM" pin will replaced all the other educational award pins. Can be bought and worn even if you have not earned your DTM yet. But why do that?




The "Past District Governor" pin has a "ruby". It can be worn be a select few but again who knows.

If you are President, buy the "Past President" pin which you can wear forever. The "President" and "Immediate Past President" pin is valid for one year only.

And Toastmasters International Convention Pins. Good news, you can buy past International Convention pins when you attend any current International Convention.
